“Bart Starr is a football legend:" Gov. Walker proclaims Nov. 1-7 as Bart Starr Week
MADISON -- Governor Scott Walker proclaimed the week of November 1–7, 2015, as Bart Starr Week.
“Bart Starr is a football legend,” Governor Walker said. “His iconic athletic performance in the ‘Ice Bowl’ in 1967 was historic and strengthened what it means to be a dedicated Packer fan in our state. Bart Starr made Wisconsin proud both on and off the field, including with his family’s support of numerous charitable organizations throughout the state. We are honored to recognize this incredible athlete and proclaim this week as Bart Starr Week in Wisconsin.”
Additionally, the Wisconsin Assembly honored Starr on Tuesday, November 3rd.
The 81-year-old most valuable player in the first Super Bowl was not able to be present Tuesday for the honor.
Starr is recovering from a life-threatening lung infection about a year after a heart attack and multiple strokes debilitated him.
State Rep. Warren Petryk wore a Starr jersey as he read a letter from his wife Cherry thanking them for the honor, saying his heart still lives in Wisconsin. Petryk says this is the first time Starr has ever been honored with such a resolution.
Starr is working to become strong enough to travel to Lambeau Field to join Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre when Favre's number is retired on Thanksgiving night.
