Brewers edge Rockies in 10 innings on Opening Day, 5-4
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee Brewers fans left Miller Park on Opening Day 2013 with huge smiles on their faces. That's because they were witness to an extra-inning victory over the Colorado Rockies, 5-4. The Brewers' Jonathan Lucroy drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly to center in the bottom of the 10th inning.
Colorado struck first in the season opener during the third inning. Troy Tulowitzki ripped a two-run homer to right center. The Brewers got one of those two runs back in the bottom half of the frame when Norichika Aoki slammed a homerun to right. At the end of the inning, the Brewers were down 2-1.
The Rockies added another run in the top of the fifth inning with a solo homer to right by Carlos Gonzalez. That put Colorado up 3-1.
The Brewers struck back in the bottom of the eighth inning. That's when Ryan Braun reached on an infield single -- driving Aoki in and putting Rickie Weeks on second. Then Alex Ramirez doubled to deep left bringing in Weeks and Braun. At the end of eight complete, the Brewers were up 4-3.
In the top of the ninth inning, the Brewers' closer John Axford struck out the first two batters. But he then gave up a solo homerun to Dexter Fowler of the Rockies. That tied the game at 4-4 -- and the Brewers failed to score in the bottom half of the frame.
Fast forward to the tenth inning. Weeks was hit by a pitch -- and then stole second. Ryan Braun was intentionally walked. Then Alex Ramirez walked -- loading up the bases for Lucroy. During his at-bat, he ripped a sac fly to center to bring Weeks in for the winning run.
The final was Brewers 5, Rockies 4.
