MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- George Webb Restaurants, a great Wisconsin tradition, predicts a 12-game winning streak for the Milwaukee Brewers. It has only happened once in 65 years and now we’re closing in on this historic repeat!
When Wisconsinites hear the name George Webb, one of the first things they think of is the 12-game prediction.
The prediction actually goes back to the 1940s when Webb predicted 17 consecutive
wins for the Brewer teams of the American Association. When the Braves moved to Milwaukee from Boston in 1953, a prediction of 12 wins in a row was painted on the Webb restaurant walls and advertised in the newspaper.
The last time the Brewers won 12 in a row was April 19, 1987 under Tom Trebelhorn.
The Brewers beat the Texas Rangers in a come-from-behind victory to bring home their twelfth consecutive win.
Although Webb had never said what he’d do if the Brewers won 12 straight, three days later George Webb restaurants were handing out free burgers to residents throughout the state.
From noon to 8:00 p.m. on April 22, George Webb restaurants served nearly 170,000 free hamburgers.
A few facts about the 1987 burger celebration:
While thousands of fans enjoyed their burgers on the spot, some fans asked George Webb company President, Dave Stamm, to autograph their burger and have kept it in the freezer for years.
George Webb makes this prediction ever year and has a good feeling it will happen again this year.
George Webb’s General Manager Ryan Stamm said, “This is such an exciting start of the year for the team. They are playing great baseball. You can bet that we’ll be cheering the crew on to 12 straight and beyond.”
George Webb was founded in 1948, with its first location being the corner of Ogden and Van Buren streets in Milwaukee. Now there are 31 locations throughout Milwaukee, Brookfield, Cedarburg, Franklin, Germantown, Greenfield, Hales Corners, Hartford, Kenosha, New Berlin, Oconomowoc, Osseo, Peshtigo, Port Washington, Racine, Sussex, Waukesha, Wauwatosa, West Allis and West Bend.
George Webb is known for having two clocks in each store, serving breakfast 24/7, and for their famous 12-game win prediction.
