Heartbreak in Madtown: Ohio State tops Wisconsin in OT, 30-23
MADISON — No. 2 Ohio State broke the hearts of the Badger faithful on Saturday evening, October 15th -- when the Buckeyes beat No. 8 Wisconsin in overtime, 30-23.
The Badgers were first to strike with a 46-yard field goal early in the first quarter. That set the early tone for the game -- Wisconsin up, 3-0.
It wasn't much later that Alex Hornibrook hit Jazz Peavy for a 24-yard touchdown score. That made it 10-0 Wisconsin.
Ohio State then converted a 25-yard field goal and cut into Wisconsin's lead. It was 10-3 Wisconsin at that point. And that's how the first quarter wrapped up.
About midway through the second quarter, the Buckeyes converted a 40-yard field goal to whittle into the Badgers' lead. The score was 10-6 at that point.
Next to score was Wisconsin. Andrew Endicott converted a field goal from 32 yards out. That made the score 13-6, Badgers.
Endicott kept Wisconsin rolling late in the second quarter when he nailed a 22-yard field goal to make it 16-6, Wisconsin.
The Wisconsin defense was back to making a statement early in the third quarter.
It wasn't until late in the third quarter that Ohio State put some fresh points on the board. The Buckeyes capped a drive with the quarterback punching it into the end zone. With the extra point, Wisconsin held onto its lead, 16-13.
On the very next series, Wisconsin's Hornibrook threw a pick -- and turned the ball over to Ohio State. The third quarter ended with the score remaining, 16-13.
The Buckeyes got their first lead early in the fourth quarter when the Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett ran it in for a touchdown. That made it 20-16 Ohio State.
On the very next series, Wisconsin fired back with a solid drive and a touchdown run from Austin Ramesh. Wisconsin went back up, 23-20.
Ohio State returned the Wisconsin score with a 31-yard field goal of their own. That tied up the game, 23-23 with less than four minutes in regulation play.
Ohio State won the toss to get the ball first in overtime -- and just a few plays later, scored on a touchdown pass. That put the Buckeyes up by 7, 30-23.
On the Badgers' opportunity to tie the game up, Wisconsin fell short on fourth and goal. That ended the game -- Ohio State won 30-23.
