Marquette edges Davidson in last-second thriller, 59-58
LEXINGTON, KY (WITI) -- The Marquette Golden Eagles edged the Davidson Wildcats with a last-second lay-up during the first round of play in the NCAA tournament on Thursday, March 21st. The final was 59-58.
Marquette was a 3 seed in its bracket and Davidson was a 14 seed.
Davidson led most of the game -- and even led by nine points late in the game. But Marquette stormed back in the waning moments of the second half.
Down by just one point with 6.7 seconds on the clock, the Golden Eagles inbounded the ball to Vander Blue who drove right to the bucket and scored the easy lay-up. After the ball dropped, there was just one second left on the clock. One last Davidson attempt to score was unsuccessful.
Marquette's top scorers in the game were Vander Blue (5-15, 16 points), Chris Otule (4-5, 11 points) and Jamil Wilson (4-13, 14 points).
Marquette now faces the Butler Bulldogs in the round of 32.
