Marquette fans excited about Golden Eagles moving on in NCAA
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Marquette University dances its way into the Sweet 16 after a victory over Butler University at Rupp Arena.
It was the Bulldogs that beat the Golden Eagles on a desperation 3-pointer back in November during the Maui Invitational. But on Saturday, Marquette would get its revenge and advance to the fourth round in Washington D.C.
Before the game, Marquette students and alumni joined together at the Sports Annex to watch the Golden Eagles take on Butler.
"People didn't believe in Marquette the first round the pundits were against us and we showed them we had the heart and that's what the tournament is all about," said Bob Jensen, class of 2009.
"I wanted to come here for the atmosphere there's a whole bunch of students that flood in and everybody can cheer together," said Sarah Schmidt, class of 2007.
The fans remembered the heart-breaker in Maui from November, and hoped Saturday would not be one of those games.
"Things like that don't go away fast, when you lose that poorly at the end of the game you just want to come back and hit them hard," said Marquette junior Alec Richard.
And for the undergraduate students, this victory was a sweet one, since last year Marquette students were on spring break during the tournament.
"It feels a lot better especially that everyone comes together even on a weekend everybody just wants Marquette to win," said Marquette junior Sarah Schmidt.
Marquette University will wait for the winner of Sunday night's matchup between the #2 seeded University of Miami Hurricanes and the #7 seeded University of Illinois Fighting Illini.
