SLINGER (WITI) -- Parker Klumb was taken all too soon over six years ago, but his life has made a remarkable impact on an entire community, and his dream was bigger than he could ever have imagined.
In 2007, Klumb was killed while riding his bicycle with friends on Highway K in Slinger, when he was just 13 years old.
Klumb loved go-karts and racing, so in their grief, Parker's friends came to Kathy Fies and asked for help.
Fies took the kids' idea to a caring community, which got the wheels rolling for the memorial go-kart event at Slinger Speedway.
The Memorial Go-Kart Event was developed by community volunteers to support youth with a positive, educational opportunity. This group of expert volunteers created the non-profit, charitable organization Memorial Go-Karts Inc.
The organization focuses on the development of positive youth activity and education through go-kart building and racing opportunities. Additionally, this community building project encourages community collaboration and unity along with providing support to families that have experienced the loss of a child.
The Memorial Go-kart Event was inspired by Klumb's death. Klumb had a dream to build and race a go-kart prior to his death.
The organization and others throughout southeastern Wisconsin have collaborated to fulfill this dream. This is an opportunity for youth, adults and community members to develop positive relationships, initiate a healing process and to unite through the sport of go-kart racing.
