"Oh that was fun!" Badgers men's basketball team honored for Final Four showing at Miller Park
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- It was a pretty big night Monday, May 4th at Miller Park with Brewers Craig Counsell managing his very first game. Counsell was announced as the Brewers new manager Monday -- with a three-year deal. It was also a night to honor the Wisconsin Badgers men's basketball team after another Final Four season.
The Badgers' sea of red was better received at Miller Park than say the St. Louis Cardinals' red!
"It never stops. We were joking before that, you know, people are going to remember this for forever. We were like it's been a month already! Like, are people over it yet? And you can tell they're not, which is a great thing, so just walking around wherever you are seeing the support everywhere -- that's what it's all about," former Badgers guard Josh Gasser said.
It's not just the fans who enjoy seeing the national runner up. Brewers bullpen catcher and Racine native Marcus Hanel is a big supporter.
"I used to play catch here back in the day, so I got to come to you. Maybe I should just give you some tips about what I used to do back in the day. The knee-savers," Badgers guard Zak Showalter said.
"And I think he's a little -- his leaping ability is a little light, so I want to give him some of my vertical that he doesn't have. No just kidding!" Hanel said.
"We'll work off each other and get some tips going here," Showalter said.
Having played on the biggest stage in their sport, some of the Badgers were pretty eager to get a chance on the diamond as part of the ceremonial first pitch before the Brewers faced the Dodgers.
"I don't know who's throwing, to be honest with you. I hope I get a chance. You know, last year I threw it a little low and outside so I want redemption," Gasser said.
"I'd go Ethan Happ. A sleeper pick," Showalter said.
"I know who the worst would be -- you know what I'm saying? I'd say Ethan (Happ) because he was a pitcher in high school so he probably has the most experience," Badgers forward Vitto Brown said.
So who'd be the worst, in Brown's opinion?
"Me without a doubt. I can catch. I got the hands, but never been a thrower," Brown said.
In the end, coach Bo Ryan Josh Gasser, Nigel Hayes and Duje Dukan got the nod.
"Oh that was fun! There's nothing like standing out there and doing this. Our team was very excited about coming here and being honored by the Brewers and I hope you guys had as much fun as our guys were," Coach Bo Ryan said.
