GREEN BAY -- The Green Bay Packers spent their first pick of the NFL draft's final day on defense, Saturday. After selecting all offensive players in the draft's previous rounds, the team selected linebacker Kamal Martin in the fifth round -- 175th overall.
Martin, a four-year player for the Minnesota Golden Gophers, made 66 total tackles as a senior. He also collected two interceptions and a sack. As a sophomore, he led the Big Ten conference in fumbles forced.
He played just eight games his senior season, compared to 12 as a junior and sophomore. However, Martin recorded his career-high totals in tackles, interceptions and fumbles forced (tie) as a senior despite having missed games.
Later Saturday, the Packers addressed the offensive line -- selecting Michigan's Jon Runyan at 192nd overall, Oregon center Jake Hanson at 208th overall and Indiana's Simon Stepaniak at 209th overall -- all the sixth round.
Runyan was a two-time All-Big Ten honoree. He appeared in 34 games -- starting 26 of them -- for the Wolverines. He started 11 games at left tackle in his final season. His father -- Jon Runyan Sr. -- also played for Michigan before embarking on a 14-year NFL career. Runyan Sr. also later served in the U.S. House of Representatives.
As a senior, Hanson was named AP Pac-12 All-Conference second team and started all 12 games at center. According to the Oregon Ducks' website, he committed just one penalty over 746 snaps played.
Stepaniak stared all 11 games for the Indiana Hoosiers in his final session -- 10 at right guard and one at left guard.
The Packers drafted Vernon Scott, a safety from Texas Christian University, and Jonathan Garvin, a defensive end from Miami, in the final round.
Scott was selected with the 236th overall pick of the draft in the seventh round. In his senior season with the Horned Frogs, he made 44 tackles, two fumbles forced, a sack and an interception -- which was returned 98 yards for a touchdown. The 6-foot-2 player appeared in 10 games each of his last two seasons.
Garvin recorded five sacks in 12 games in his final season for the Hurricanes. He also made 37 tackles and forced two fumbles.
