Packers sign punter Tim Masthay to a contract extension

GREEN BAY -- The Green Bay Packers signed punter Tim Masthay to a contract extension on Friday.

According to the Packers, Masthay set a single-season franchise record (since 1976) for gross punting average (45.6) in 2011. It exclipsed the previous record posted by Craig Hentrich (45.0 in 1997). Masthay also set a team record last season for net punting average (38.6), topping the previous mark shared by Masthay (37.6 in 2010) and Jon Ryan (37.6 in 2007).

In two seasons with Green Bay, Masthay has appeared in all 32 regular-season games and has posted a 44.6-yard gross punting average, a 38.0-yard net punting average and placed 48 punts inside the 20.

Masthay, who attended the University of Kentucky, signed with Green Bay as a free agent in January 2010.
