Panthers can't keep up with Cleveland State in Horizon League opener
CLEVELAND (AP) — Trey Lewis poured in 27 points and Cleveland State pulled away in the second half to defeat Milwaukee 84-57 in the Horizon League opener for both teams Friday night.
The Vikings (7-8, 1-0) trailed by three at the half, but stormed away in the final 13:41, closing the game on a 42-14 run. Lewis scored 20 of his points in the second half and provided two jumpers, a 3-pointer, four free throws and a layup during the decisive surge.
Cleveland State shot a torrid 82.1 percent from the field and scored 57 points in the second half, matching Milwaukee's total for the game. Anton Grady had 18 points and eight rebounds and Charlie Lee chipped in 16 points.
Milwaukee (5-10, 0-1) couldn't keep pace, being held to 6-of-21 shooting in the second half. Matt Tiby led the Panthers with 16 points and nine rebounds while Steve McWhorter added 16 points.
