UW-Madison student convicted in racial arsons starting pro-white group

MADISON — A student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison charged with arsons at two predominantly black churches years ago is recruiting on campus for a local chapter of a national pro-white party.The 33-year-old Daniel Dropik said Thursday he is starting a Madison chapter of the American Freedom Party, though has not yet registered the group as an official student organization.Students are planning a Tuesday march protesting Dropik's efforts.

UW-Madison chancellor can't declare sanctuary

MADISON -- University of Wisconsin-Madison officials say Chancellor Rebecca Blank doesn't have the authority to declare the school a sanctuary for students who entered the country illegally.The Associated Students of Madison passed a resolution Wednesday calling on Blank and UW System President Ray Cross to declare UW-Madison and all system schools sanctuaries for students who entered the country illegally before President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration.The resolution explains that the declaration would mean the campuses wouldn't work with federal immigration authorities on deportation issues and the schools would bar federal immigration authorities from visiting the campuses to make arrests.UW-Madison spokesman John Lucas said in email Thursday that Blank doesn't have the power to make such a declaration and she must run the school within the constraints of federal and state law.

MADISON — University of Wisconsin officials on Saturday, October 29th asked a fan wearing what appeared to be a President Barack Obama mask and a noose around his neck to remove the offensive parts of the costume during the school's football game against Nebraska.A picture circulating on social media showed the fan in a black-and-white jumpsuit, wearing the mask, the noose and a sign on his chest.

UW-Madison spends $24M to keep 200 professors from leaving

MADISON — The University of Wisconsin-Madison says it spent nearly $24 million in its latest fiscal year to persuade about 200 faculty members not to leave after other universities ramped up their efforts to lure professors away in the wake of budget cuts and tenure changes.But an annual report released Friday also says that despite those efforts, 34 professors left UW-Madison for other universities during the 2016 fiscal year — a substantial increase over other recent years.The Wisconsin State Journal reports that officials say the surge of outside interest in UW-Madison professors illustrates how a $250 million cut to higher education funding in the 2015-17 state budget, coupled with a move by lawmakers to weaken tenure protections, have affected the university's standing in the highly competitive academic job market.

Amazon to open retail pickup location at UW-Madison this fall

MADISON — University of Wisconsin administrators have suspended the Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter at the school's flagship campus, saying members were found to have repeatedly used racist, homophobic and anti-Semitic slurs and ostracized a black student who tried to stop it.The university's Committee on Student Organizations banned the fraternity from all Greek activities through Nov. 1 and won't allow it to recruit this fall.University documents say a former fraternity member came forward with allegations about the slurs and accused a fraternity member of assaulting him.

Former star Tony Granato to take reigns of UW Badgers men's hockey program

Wisconsin removes 'interim' tag, names Greg Gard coach to replace Bo Ryan

MADISON — Wisconsin has named Greg Gard the permanent replacement for retired basketball coach Bo Ryan.The university's Board of Regents approved Gard's contract on Monday night following his successful audition as the interim coach.Terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed by the university.Wisconsin is 13-6 since Gard took over following Ryan's abrupt retirement after a game on Dec. 15.
