UW student may face paralysis after diving accident at Lake Mendota

MADISON (AP) — A 20-year-old University of Wisconsin-Madison student may face paralysis after a diving accident at Lake Mendota.Madison police say the student dove into water that was about 5 feet deep on Saturday night and hit his head on the bottom of the lake.The Wisconsin State Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1ooqdCl ) the student was paralyzed afterward, but was able to float to the lake's surface and call out to his friends, who brought him to shore while keeping his neck stable.The man remains at a local hospital.

UW-Madison school gets $25 million grant for College of Engineering

MADISON (AP) — The Grainger Foundation is giving a $25 million grant the University of Wisconsin College of Engineering to create a new institute.The goal of the Grainger Institute for Engineering will be to create a more interdisciplinary teaching approach and focus on manufacturing advances to boost the nation's economic competitiveness.The commitment is the largest in the college's history and will allow them hire another 25 faculty members, bringing their faculty count to 250.College of Engineering Dean Ian Robertson says it will help them make new discoveries and boost the university's reputation.David Grainger, president and director of the foundation, graduated from UW-Madison with an engineering degree in 1950, and the School of Business was named for him.

University of Wisconsin researchers take on ticks

MADISON (AP) — A team of researchers at the University of Wisconsin is taking on deer ticks — with hopes of giving people a tool to protect themselves from the bugs that can transmit Lyme disease.WISC-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1jFcise ) the team is using mice and the university's Arboretum for their research.The team is laying out 25 sections of PVC pipe in the Arboretum, filling each pipe with cotton balls containing an insecticide that kills ticks.

CHICAGO (AP) — A smartphone app for recovering alcoholics that includes a panic button and sounds an alert when they get too close to taverns helped keep some on the wagon.That's according to University of Wisconsin researchers who developed the tool.Adults released from in-patient alcoholism treatment centers who got free sober smartphones reported fewer drinking days and more overall abstinence than those who got the usual follow-up support.A host of smartphone apps are available that feature a variety of options for trying to prevent alcoholics and drug addicts from relapsing.The study results are based on patients' self-reporting, which is a potential limitation.

UW police captain fired in equipment probe

MADISON (AP) — The University of Wisconsin-Madison Police Department has fired a veteran captain after an internal investigation revealed he used department cameras to take hundreds of inappropriate photos of department employees and members of the public.Agency spokesman Marc Lovicott said 17-year department veteran Peter Ystenes was fired on March 12.
