Foxconn reconsiders Wisconsin plan to manufacture LCD screens

MOUNT PLEASANT — Electronics giant Foxconn reversed course and announced Wednesday that the huge Wisconsin plant that was supposed to bring a bounty of blue-collar factory jobs back to the Midwest — and was lured with billions in tax incentives — will instead be primarily a research and development center staffed by scientists and engineers.The move was decried in some quarters as a case of bait-and-switch by the Taiwan-based company, which originally planned to build high-tech liquid crystal display screens in a project President Donald Trump had proudly pointed to as a sign of a resurgence in American manufacturing.In a statement, Foxconn said it remains committed to Wisconsin and the creation of 13,000 jobs as promised.

Audit faults plans to credit Foxconn for work outside state

MADISON — The Wisconsin Legislative Audit Bureau says the state needs to modify its procedures so tax credits aren't awarded for Foxconn Technology Group employees who don't do work in Wisconsin.The Audit Bureau on Wednesday released its findings that the procedures established by the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation don't comply with the law or the Foxconn contract.No tax credits have been awarded to Foxconn.

Advocates sue DNR over water records for Foxconn diversion

MADISON — An environmental law center is suing the state Department of Natural Resources over the agency's refusal to hand over records related to diverting Lake Michigan water for a new Foxconn Technology Group plant.Midwest Environmental Advocates in May challenged DNR approval of a city of Racine request to pull millions of gallons from the lake daily for the plant.MEA filed a lawsuit Dec. 3 alleging the DNR hasn't fully complied with an August request for records relating to the diversion.
