"Significant danger:" Acting sheriff orders enhanced truck safety enforcement on freeways

MILWAUKEE -- Citing "significant danger" when not maintained, due to their "massive size," Acting Milwaukee County Sheriff Richard Schmidt has ordered "enhanced truck safety enforcement" on Milwaukee County's freeways.According to a news release from the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, safety inspection operations on commercial motor vehicles are conducted by deputies certified in truck inspections.Unsafe trucks with serious equipment violations, combined with excessive speeds, is a recipe for disaster on the 158 miles of the Milwaukee County expressway system, sheriff's officials said in the release.

“Operation Trick or Treat:" 12 sex offenders arrested for violations during Halloween celebration

MILWAUKEE -- Officials with the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office announced Monday, October 30th 12 registered sex offenders were arrested Sunday as they teamed up with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, US Marshals and district attorney investigators for "Operation Trick or Treat."The initiative involved law enforcement visiting 220 registered sex offenders to check for violations during Trick-or-Treating in Milwaukee.Those arrested were taken into custody for felony violations of their probation and parole conditions.Acting Sheriff Richard Schmidt said in a news release, “the annual initiative is effective and combines the resources of multiple law enforcement agencies to target offenders who, when given an opportunity, prey on the children in our community.”Some of the violation details were:

Officials to conduct "Knock and Talks" at homes of sex offenders during trick-or-treat hours

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee County officials are taking steps to ensure children are safe as they go trick-or-treating door to door through neighborhoods collecting Halloween treats.On Sunday, October 29th, the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office Apprehension Unit and Criminal Investigative Unit, Wisconsin Department of Corrections (DOC) Probation and Parole, and District Attorney’s Office investigators partnered to conduct "Knock and Talks" at residences of known sex offenders and serve warrants on sex offenders who have not registered with the Wisconsin Sex Offender Registry.During the “Knock and Talks,” officers will enforce and confirm that sexual predators are in compliance with the Halloween guidelines set forth by the DOC:

Traffic stop involving driver who was "all over the road" leads to lane closures on I-41

WAUWATOSA -- Deputies with the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office temporarily had the right lanes of northbound I-41 near Center Street blocked off to traffic due to what was being described as law enforcement activity Monday, October 23rd.A spokeswoman for MCSO said someone with the US Marshals Service spotted a vehicle traveling "all over the road" on I-41 northbound around 11:10 a.m.In what was thought to be an OWI, deputies boxed the driver in, and stopped her vehicle at Burleigh.An investigation is ongoing.Monitor FOX6 News and FOX6Now.com for updates.

HeartSaver Heroes: 1st responders honored after using AED to save airport worker's life 👍

MILWAUKEE -- Three Milwaukee County sheriff's deputies and the captain of the Airport Division were recognized as "HeartSaver Heroes" by the American Heart Association Thursday, October 19th during a special ceremony at General Mitchell International Airport.Deputies Steven Gunn, Cary Startz and Daniel Zielinski, Captain Mark Witek and Joshua Jackson were recognized as HeartSaver Heroes.According to a press release, Jackson in November of 2016 began performing CPR on his co-worker, Moira Glavan, who experienced sudden cardiac arrest inside Concourse E at the airport.Gunn, Startz and Zielinski, along with Witek, responded to the call with an AED (automated external defibrillator) and shocked her heart back into rhythm.Gunn took turns alternating chest compressions and rescue breaths along with the team from Airport Fire Rescue 9, where Glavan's husband is a firefighter, until she was revived.PHOTO GALLERYDuring the ceremony, Gunn said this was emotional for him because his father died when he was 13 from a heart attack.According to the release, the HeartSaver Hero award is presented to people who take action to save a life outside of a hospital setting by performing CPR and/or employing the use of an AED.

Traffic slows on I-41 NB near Capitol Drive due to vehicle fire

MILWAUKEE -- The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) reports a vehicle fire is caused backups on I-41 northbound near Capitol Drive, Wednesday afternoon, October 18th.Officials say the incident started around 4:00 p.m.A FOX6 viewer sent in video of the scene, which shows a charred van on the freeway.
