FOND DU LAC COUNTY -- Governor Scott Walker shut down the idea that Milwaukee Public Schools should be the only charter school authorizer in Milwaukee.MPS Superintendent Darienne Driver said Wednesday, March 8th that charter school operators spend too much time figuring out who to charter with, and what buildings to use, and not enough time on student achievement.

Wisconsin Assembly to vote on 'right to try' bill

MADISON — Terminally ill patients could have access to experimental drugs more quickly under a bill up for passage in the Wisconsin state Assembly.The so-called "right to try" proposal up for a vote Tuesday would allow certain patients to be prescribed drugs that have yet to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration.Supporters say too many patients can't get into clinical trials to try experimental drugs and it takes the FDA too long to approve some that could help terminal patients.The Wisconsin Medical Society opposes the measure, saying it will sidestep the scientifically valid process of determining whether experimental drugs can help certain patients.The bill must also pass the Senate and be signed by Gov.

MADISON — The Wisconsin Legislature is set to pass a bill long sought by parents of children who suffer from seizures.The state Assembly was slated to pass a measure Tuesday that would legalize possession of CBD oil, a marijuana extract used to treat seizures.The Legislature passed a similar bill in 2014, but it didn't go far enough to make the oil accessible.

Assembly committee to hold hearing on opioid bills

MADISON — The state Assembly's criminal justice committee is set to hold a hearing on three bills designed to slow opioid abuse.The measures would allow school nurses to administer overdose antidotes, increase funding for treatment and diversion programs by $2.4 million and lay out $420,000 annually to hire four more drug agents in the state Justice Department.
