CANADA -- Governor Scott Walker will lead a business development mission to Canada in June as part of the state’s ongoing effort to encourage international companies to invest in Wisconsin.“As we did during our April trip to Europe and our mission to the U.K. earlier this year, we will promote Wisconsin’s strong business climate, outstanding workforce and key industry sectors to as compelling assets for successful business operations in Wisconsin.” said Governor Walker.During the mission, which runs from June 12-17, Governor Walker and representatives of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) will talk to leaders at select Canadian companies about establishing new operations in Wisconsin.

Committee rejects Governor Walker's plan to freeze land buys

MADISON — Wisconsin lawmakers have rejected Republican Governor Scott Walker's plan to block the state Department of Natural Resources from purchasing any land through its stewardship program for at least the next 13 years.Walker's budget would place a moratorium on stewardship land acquisitions until debt service on purchases already made drops to $1 for every $8 spent since the program began in 1989.

Lawmakers to vote on plan to impose stiffer civil penalties for unemployment fraud

MADISON — Republicans who control the Wisconsin Legislature's budget committee plan to impose stiffer civil penalties for unemployment fraud but scrap plans to create harsher criminal penalties.Right now penalties can include losing eligibility, a surcharge equal to 15 percent of the benefits erroneously paid, criminal fines ranging from $100 to $500 and up to 90 days in jail.Governor Scott Walker's budget calls for upping the surcharge to 40 percent and creating a scale of criminal penalties ranging from a $10,000 fine and up to nine months in jail to $25,000 in fines and up to five years in prison.Committee Republicans released plan Wednesday, May 27th that calls for adopting the surcharge increase but rejecting the criminal penalty changes.
