Rudy the red-tailed hawk now has permanent home at Racine Zoo

RACINE (WITI) -- The Racine Zoological Society says Rudy, a native Wisconsin red-tailed hawk and official mascot of Gateway Technical College, now has a permanent home in a special exhibit at the zoo.The female hawk came to the zoo from a wildlife rehabilitator and is healing from a broken wing.

17-year-old from Racine charged with criminal trespassing

RACINE (WITI) -- A 17-year-old from Racine has been charged in connection with an incident allegedly involving criminal trespassing.Braxxton Griffey of Racine faces one count of criminal trespassing -- a misdemeanor charge.On April 4th, 2014, just after 10:00 p.m., police were dispatched to a residence in the 2200 block of Harriet Street in Racine in reference to a burglary in progress.A 911 caller reportedly found male subjects in the residence -- and the subjects had run out of the rear door.A criminal complaint in the case says two women showed up to the home that they believed was vacant.

Mother, four children displaced by house fire in Racine

RACINE (WITI) -- Racine Fire officials say a mother and her four children are receiving temporary shelter via the American Red Cross after a fire on Tuesday, April 1st.The fire broke out at a home in on West Street, just before 7:00 p.m.Fire officials believe the fire was started by children playing with fire in an upstairs bedroom.The fire was contained to the bedroom, and quickly extinguished.The fire caused about $15,000 in damage.Fire officials say this home had no working smoke detectors.

Racine police identify 21-year-old man who died of gunshot wound

Racine McDonald's restaurants stepping up for Mitchell students

RACINE (WITI) – The seven McDonald’s restaurants in Racine will join forces on Monday, March 31st to raise funds for the fire-damaged Mitchell Elementary and Middle Schools.On that day, five percent from the entire day’s sales from each of the Racine McDonald’s restaurants will be donated to the schools’ rebuilding efforts.“The day after the fire, I received calls from several teachers and parents to ask about running a special fundraiser for Mitchell,” said Dave Jones who operates six McDonald’s restaurants with his family.  “So the idea really came from the community wanting to help, and we were happy to come up with a plan.”Customers are also invited to donate school supplies at the restaurants, where McDonald’s personnel will ensure the supplies get into the hands of the teachers and students.The Racine McDonald’s restaurants participating in the fundraising event are:

Demolition of damaged parts of Mitchell Elem. to begin Wednesday

RACINE (WITI) -- Racine Fire Department officials tell FOX6 News the damaged parts of Mitchell Elementary School will be demolished beginning Wednesday morning, March 12th.Fire ripped through the elementary school’s gym on Thursday, February 27th -- causing the roof to collapse.

Racine man charged after allegedly failing to pay hotel bills

RACINE (WITI) -- A Racine man has been charged in connection with fraud of an inkeeper -- and faces two misdemeanor charges.41-year-old Donovan Williams of Racine faces one count of fraud on an innkeeper - non-payment (less than $2,500) and misdemeanor bail jumping.A criminal complaint in the case says an officer was dispatched to the Marriott Hotel in the 7100 block of Washington Avenue in the Village of Mount Pleasant on March 10th.Upon arrival, officers spoke with the front desk manager, who indicated that locked up in his room, Williams had been in the hotel since March 3rd -- and had an outstanding bill of $881.17.

Mitchell students excited to start at Wind Point on Wednesday
