Heaviest snow from latest storm fell north of metro Milwaukee area

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Snow reports from the National Weather Service show the heaviest snow from our latest storm left up to nine inches of snow in the far northern portions of the FOX6 viewing area.The heaviest snow band fell north of Highway 60 in Ozaukee County.

Tow companies, plow drivers ready for snow cleanup in Sheboygan

SHEBOYGAN (WITI) -- Snow was expected to fall in Wisconsin on Tuesday, January 14th -- and a Winter Storm Warning was issued for counties to the north of Milwaukee -- including Dodge, Ozaukee, Washington, Sheboygan, and Fond du Lac.In Sheboygan 5-7 inches of snow were possible Tuesday and Tuesday night.We saw a lull in the snowfall on Tuesday afternoon -- and many in Sheboygan were waiting for the snow to fall, so they could get out and start the cleanup process.Even without the snow falling on Tuesday afternoon, Arrow Towing and Recovery was busy -- and has been this winter."We are swamped.

Waupun man dealing with aftermath of frost/ice quake

Forecast this week brings opportunity for winter precipitation

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- We won't see the bitterly cold temperatures we saw last week -- but we could see some winter precipitation as we begin this work week.FOX6's Vince Condella says we could see rain and freezing rain after midnight and overnight Sunday, January 12th -- and a low temperature around freezing (32 degrees).Condella says the rain and freezing rain should be out of the area by Monday morning's rush hour -- but there could still be a few slick spots during your morning commute due to the extensive snowcover and cold ground.Condella advises watching for slick spots on roads, bridges and sidewalks on Monday.The remainder of Monday should be partly sunny and breezy with a high around 34.Tuesday brings a chance for snow.

Bitter cold may impact plants, especially "marginal" shrubs

One cost of the bitter cold may not show up until Spring -- and involves your plants.With the mild winters we've had, garden centers say people have put in more "marginal" shrubs -- varieties that don't fare well in a deep freeze.The top tree in trouble is the Japanese Maple.Broad leaf evergreen types of rhododendron and azalea could also be in trouble.There have been a number of new cold weather varieties of hydrangeas coming out and they're so new that no one knows how they'll hold up.

Special MPD unit out in cold trying to protect city's homeless

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- With a Wind Chill Warning in place, and bitterly cold temperatures settled in, Milwaukee police on Monday night, January 6th were putting special emphasis on getting those without shelter to safety.Doctors say those with medical conditions, the elderly, the very young and the homeless are most in danger when temperatures fall to this level -- and some of the homeless have never experienced weather like what we're seeing now.Wind chill values Monday and Tuesday were expected to be in the -35° to -50° range."It's extremely dangerous with the wind chills as they are now," Milwaukee Police Officer Jim Knapinski said.For the past four years, Officer Knapinski has been part of the Milwaukee Police Homeless Outreach Team."It's the coldest day I've had," Knapinski said Monday.Officer Knapinski drives around parts of downtown, looking for some of the city's most vulnerable to the cold.

First responders ready as dangerous cold sets in Monday

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- With a Wind Chill Warning in effect on Monday, January 6th and extending into Tuesday afternoon, emergency responders were ready and waiting for anyone who might need medical attention as a result of the bitter cold.The Milwaukee Fire Department on Monday was taking special measures to protect firefighters and the public as wind chill values were expected to drop to the -35° to -50° range.Milwaukee Fire crews on Sunday night responded to a fire at an apartment building near 63rd and Florist that took a toll not only on the fire victims who were displaced from their homes and left to find temporary housing in the bitter cold -- but also the firefighters."You immediately freeze over.

Furnace repair businesses hopping as cold spell hits SE Wis.

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- One of the businesses that's hoping during this bitter cold spell is furnace repair businesses.Kettle Moraine Heating and Air Conditioning has been bustling with service calls all weekend.In some cases, people need a new furnace, but often, it's problems associated with maintenance -- such as a clogged filter, a dead thermostat battery or snow piles that are blocking the PVC exhaust pipes.The biggest advice is to call for service early."If you start to see things that are hiccupping or having problems early in the week or early in the day -- call us then.
