DPW: 286 pieces of equipment ready to clear snow from streets in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE -- Snow is in the forecast -- and the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning and Winter Weather Advisory for counties in southeastern Wisconsin beginning Monday night, February 29th and continuing into Tuesday morning, March 1st. Officials with the city of Milwaukee's Department of Public Works will begin pre-treating roads on Monday evening.

A Winter Storm Warning takes effect at 9:00 p.m. Monday and remains in effect until 9:00 a.m. Tuesday for the following counties: Milwaukee, Waukesha, Jefferson, Walworth, Racine & Kenosha.

A Winter Weather Advisory takes effect at midnight Monday night/Tuesday morning and remains in effect until 9:00 a.m. Tuesday.

The FOX6 Weather Experts say snow will move in from the west-southwest after 9:00 p.m. and overspread the area overnight. The steadiest snow will occur from 4:00 a.m. - 7:00 a.m. Tuesday, which could make for a tricky morning commute.

Four to six inches of snow is possible in Milwaukee -- with higher amounts south, and lesser amounts north.

With a gusty wind, visibilities could be lowered for a time as well. The snow will taper off during the morning, ending by noon on Tuesday.

DPW crews will begin salting/pre-treating city side streets on Monday, February 29th at 6:00 p.m.  using 96 city salt trucks and 12 private contractor salt trucks, for 108 trucks total.

After the side streets have been completed, salt trucks will move to the main roads.

The DPW has 102 garbage and recycling trucks mounted with plow blades ready to go if and when they are needed.

If needed, 16 private contract plow trucks and 60 private contract end loaders will be used.

In all, the DPW has 286 pieces of equipment available, if needed.

DPW officials will continue to monitor the forecast.
