A judge ruled that a 12-year-old boy arrested for shooting and killing a man over the weekend will remain in juvenile custody for now.

A judge ruled that a 12-year-old boy arrested for shooting and killing a man over the weekend will remain in juvenile custody for now.

The Milwaukee Police Department said officers were called to a home near 51st and Locust around 2:15 p.m. Saturday afternoon, Dec. 14.

Police and fire crews found a 32-year-old man who had been shot. He was taken to the hospital where he later died. Police say the shooting stemmed from an argument and the 12-year-old boy was arrested.

Police records show the boy was taken into custody nearly an hour later at a home about a mile to the south, near 52nd and Garfield.

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as Levon Osuji.

The boy appeared via Zoom in juvenile court on Monday afternoon.

The state requested more time to put its case together, and requested the boy be held an additional 48 hours.

Milwaukee police arrested a 12-year-old child after a fatal shooting near 51st and Hadley on the city's north side Saturday afternoon, Dec. 14.

The boy's defense attorney, Colton Hanus, argued the boy should be allowed to go home with his parents, noting that while the police report is brief, his attorney said quote "It really tells a story of this young individual coming to the aid and protecting, and really acting in self-defense and defense of others."

Ultimately, the judge ruled in favor of the state.

The boy is due back in court later this week.
