Officer hurt in New Berlin wrong-way crash; driver arrested for OWI

A New Berlin Police officer was injured after police say a man drove the wrong way down the street, causing a crash involving the officer's squad car.

What we know:

According to the New Berlin Police Department, on Sunday night, Feb. 9, at 10:24 p.m., an on-duty New Berlin police officer was in their squad vehicle when they were involved in a crash with the wrong-way driver on Moorland Road just south of Cleveland Avenue.

Police say the driver was going north in the southbound lanes of Moorland, and the officer took evasive maneuvers to avoid the crash and struck another vehicle in the process.

The officer, a five-year veteran of the department, broke a finger and was treated at a local hospital and released.

Milwaukee man arrested; OWI 5th offense in Waukesha County

A 39-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested by the Wisconsin State Patrol in Waukesha County for operating a motor vehicle under the influence, fifth offense.

The driver of the wrong-way vehicle, a 57-year-old New Berlin man, stayed at the scene.

The Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office conducted an impaired driving investigation and arrested the driver for Operating While Intoxicated – Causing Injury. Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor. The driver was taken to Waukesha County Jail.

Neither the driver nor the people in the other vehicle were injured.

Wisconsin State Patrol investigated the crash.
