'Our hearts go out:' Leaders from city, state, nation react to Miller Brewery shooting

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and Governor Tony Evers shared messages in the wake of the Miller Brewery shooting to not only the people of Milwaukee, but all of Wisconsin.Police say five people were fatally shot, and the shooter, a Milwaukee man, 51, was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said Sunday, Feb. 9 he plans to deliver an upbeat State of the City address Monday morning, and despite challenges like reckless driving, he's looking ahead to what the rest of 2020 will bring.Mayor Barrett plans to tackle the usual topics of health care and education, while also focusing on reckless driving and the July Democratic National Convention.The name Milwaukee is rooted in tribal language, and fittingly, Mayor Barrett will deliver his State of the City address at Potawatomi Hotel & Casino."It's a pretty upbeat speech because I think there are a lot of good things going on right now," said Mayor Barrett.

Flu activity in Milwaukee 'concerning' to doctors, 281 hospitalizations as of Jan. 31

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett spoke about flu activity in the city on Tuesday, Feb. 4, noting an increase in flu hospitalizations he called "concerning to medical providers," with that number more than four times higher than at the same time in 2019.Health officials said Tuesday with a lot of focus being placed on coronavirus, they wanted to re-emphasize simple ways you can help protect yourself.Mayor Barrett noted from Sept. 1, 2019 through Jan. 31, 2020, there were 281 flu hospitalizations in the City of Milwaukee, compared to just 70 during this period in 2019."One reason this flu season is different -- Influenza B was the predominant strain early on during the flu season," Barrett said. "In the past few weeks, the much stronger and faster traveling Influenza A has been increasing."

MILWAUKEE -- Democratic leaders in Milwaukee held a news conference on Tuesday morning, Jan. 14 to about what they called President Donald Trump's "broken promises on health care." This, ahead of President Trump's campaign rally Tuesday evening in Milwaukee.Instead of hosting a rally at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panther Arena Tuesday night, Democrats and protesters said he should be talking one-on-one with people about their struggles to access and afford quality health insurance.
