MILWAUKEE -- "Where The Wild Things Are" has made its way to downtown Milwaukee.A traveling exhibit featuring the writing and art of author Maurice Sendak will open Friday, July 10th at Milwaukee's Central Library.The exhibit celebrates the 50th anniversary of Sendak's classic children's book "Where The Wild Things Are."Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett says it is a perfect reason to explore the library and get kids interested in reading."Reading is cool.

Firefighter, ambulance struck by gunfire while helping patient: "We are the good guys"

MILWAUKEE -- A Milwaukee firefighter was struck by gunfire near 40th and Lisbon early Monday, July 6th -- as he was assisting a patient who was having trouble breathing.Officials say the firefighters were dispatched to the neighborhood around 12:30 a.m. MFD personnel assessed, treated and were in the process of transferring a patient into an ambulance when police say shots were fired in a nearby alley.Several rounds struck the ambulance and one struck a 46-year-old Milwaukee Fire Department firefighter.

"Red Box for bicycles:" Mayor promotes Bublr Bikes bike-sharing program during "Bike To Work" week

MILWAUKEE -- It is "Bike To Work" week in Milwaukee -- and residents are encouraged to ride their bicycles to work.Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett on Wednesday, June 10th joined members of Milwaukee’s Common Council, the Wisconsin Bike Fed, Bublr Bikes, and Department of Public Works for a bike ride in downtown Milwaukee to showcase Milwaukee's bike-sharing system.Bike To Work week is also an opportunity to promote healthy living."The city of Milwaukee has partnered with Bublr and you're gonna see more and more Bublr locations, so if people wanna get out then they can rent the bike for an hour or two hours and then return it to another Bublr location.

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele will unveil a new plan to end chronic homelessness in Milwaukee County with Mayor Tom Barrett at the site of the new Thurgood Marshall Apartments on Tuesday, June 9th.Through a mix of increased funding and strategic service placements, the plan will end chronic homelessness in Milwaukee County in three years, according to Abele's office.“Although the county has been involved in addressing homelessness for years, we decided that incremental progress was no longer good enough for our community,” County Executive Chris Abele said. “We are ending chronic homelessness.

Mayor Barrett's "Walk 100 Miles in 100 Days" challenge begins for second year

MILWAUKEE -- On Monday, June 1st, Milwaukee Mayor announced his "Walk 100 Miles in 100 Days" challenge will begin for its second year.Residents of all ages are encouraged to add physical activity to their daily routines for the next 100 days.Last year's participants logged more than 26,000 miles walking.The challenge began Monday with a warm-up by the YMCA before Mayor Barrett led a walk downtown."By walking you get a better sense of all the things that are going on, and it's just more fun.

Arena-funding deal may be close at hand; Bucks, city leaders optimistic
