Mayor Barrett taking steps toward fixing problems with the roads

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Due to this winter’s extreme weather conditions, Mayor Barrett has directed his budget team and the Department of Public Works to prepare proposals to increase road condition fixes for this spring.This will include increasing crews and supplies, targeting 2014 paving and road work to the areas of highest need, and carefully monitoring weather conditions to get secure pothole fixes in place as soon as possible.From the beginning of the year through Tuesday, February 18th, 1,251 pothole location requests were received.

Some victims not happy with Archdiocese reorganization plan

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Archdiocese of Milwaukee announced on Wednesday, February 12th that it is filing its Plan of Reorganization in its Chapter 11 proceedings -- and some victims say they're not happy with the plan, nor how it was delivered.The plan will establish a $500,000 Lifetime Therapy Fund for abuse survivors. $4 million will also be available to provide financial settlements for abuse survivors with eligible claims.

Milwaukee Co. Sheriff David Clarke considers 2016 run for mayor

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke announced on a local radio show Friday morning, January 31st, that he may be looking to move into another position in 2016 -- Mayor of Milwaukee.While Clarke is still running for sheriff this year, on the Jay Weber Show on 1130 WISN Radio he admitted he's considering another job in government, this time in the City of Milwaukee."This is my hometown.

Mayor Barrett encourages flexibility for city workers

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett says city buildings and facilities will remain open on Tuesday, January 28th despite the extreme cold -- but is urging city workers to check with their supervisors regarding the plan for Tuesday's work day.Mayor Barrett issued the following statement on Monday afternoon:"Due to the extreme inclement weather expected through (Tuesday), I am asking Department Heads to do everything possible to maintain a regular schedule of operations while safeguarding the health and welfare of City employees.While City buildings and facilities will remain open for service, employees engaged in operations which are of a non-critical nature as identified by the Department Heads should be given options to be excused from work using vacation, compensatory time off or other paid leave allowed under the Milwaukee Code of Ordinances or departmental work rules.Non-critical services are those which can be postponed or suspended temporarily without affecting the health, welfare or safety of the community.Department Heads shall afford flexibility for delayed reporting and/or early departure of employees as necessary.Requests from employees to make-up the time within the week or as needed by a department to ensure the continuity of services may be implemented at the discretion of the Department Heads.If there are changes in operations, please take the appropriate measures to notify the public in advance to minimize delays and unnecessary travel and waiting periods."Milwaukee County offices and buildings, including the Milwaukee County Courthouse will be closed on Tuesday.

Milwaukee Co. judge says residency rule is "unenforceable"

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Paul Van Grunsven says the city of Milwaukee's residency rule is "unenforceable." That was part of a 21-page ruling issued on Monday, January 27th.The city's residency rule required all city workers, police officers, firefighters and teachers to live within city limits.

MFD probe recommends 5 members of Engine 32 be fired

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Milwaukee Fire Department has completed its internal investigation and recommended to Fire Chief Mark Rohlfing that he discharge five members for "failing to prevent or report extensive vandalism and disorder committed at the quarters of Engine 32" in September 2013.A total of nine firefighters from Engine 32 at 30th and Vliet were placed on administrative suspension after allegations of vandalism surfaced.

Stolen thumb drive recovered, teenage suspect arrested

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Milwaukee Police Department has arrested a 17-year-old male for his role in the theft of a thumb drive containing the personal information of thousands of City of Milwaukee employees and their spouses.The thumb drive, a laptop computer, and a computer bag were stolen when a Dynacare Laboratories employee’s car was stolen on October 22nd.
