Mayor Barrett honored for Milwaukee Energy Efficiency program

LAS VEGAS (WITI) -- Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett has received honorable mention in the 2013 Mayors' Climate Protection Awards for the Milwaukee Energy Efficiency program.The program, also known as Me2, helps homeowners and businesses located in the City of Milwaukee make energy saving building improvements such as new insulation, energy efficient lighting and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions."We are rebuilding Milwaukee from the inside out with the Me2 program, building by building," said Mayor Barrett. "Me2 makes it easy and affordable for property owners in the City of Milwaukee to make energy efficiency upgrades that improve buildings, create local jobs, improve the environment and help us stay economically competitive."The Me2 program has updated 776 homes in the City of Milwaukee and approved more than $16 million worth of commercial building upgrades in more than 130 properties.Milwaukee home owners who complete qualified home improvements by August 30th, 2013, can receive substantial Me2 rebates.

Police respond to three shooting incidents on "Ceasefire Sabbath"

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett visited Milwaukee-area churches on Sunday, June 9th to promote nonviolence in the Milwaukee community as part of the ninth annual Ceasefire Sabbath.Every year, Mayor Barrett asks Milwaukee’s religious leaders to join him in disseminating words of peace to parishioners and community members.Due to numerous mass shootings during the past year and in an effort to stem local shootings, the Mayor urged faith leaders at a kick-off breakfast earlier this week to raise awareness about gun violence during this weekend’s services.“During the past year, we were shocked and grief-stricken over mass shootings in Aurora, Oak Creek, Brookfield and Newtown, as well as the ‘slow motion mass murders’ that occur by gun fire every day in U.S. cities,” Mayor Barrett said. “We ask congregants to stand with victims and their families against gun violence.”Last week, Mayor Barrett spoke with members of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Milwaukee."We have to find ways to reduce the violence in the city," Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said as he addressed a crowd.The room was packed with police, city officials and religious leaders all brainstorming ways to stop the violence."Let's see what we can do to make it better," Pamela Collins said.

Mayor Barrett working to fight proposed residency rules

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A decision on residency rules by the Joint Committee on Finance has Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and other city leaders working to make sure the proposed rules don't become law.The committee voted Thursday, May 9th, to allow police, firefighters and emergency workers to live 15 miles outside of the city where they work."We'll do everything we can to fight for this city, even with this frontal attack that occurred against MIlwaukee," said Barrett.Others, like Mike Crivello of the Milwaukee Police Association, welcomed the committee's decision.“There’s going to be opportunity for people who might otherwise not have applied in the city of Milwaukee,” said Crivello.The proposed residency requirements were approved by the panel on a 12-4 party line vote, but local officials say it wasn't their decision to make."This is an issue we can deal with and this is totally contrary to the Republican virtues which is local control," said Milwaukee Common Council President Willie Hines.Currently the city of Milwaukee requires workers to live within the city, but Thursday's vote could change that.
