Wisconsin wind chill advisory; long-lasting arctic cold moves in

A Wind Chill Advisory is in effect for all of southeast Wisconsin until 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 17.
Wednesday will be the last morning when wind chills can reach 30 below zero range. Being outside with sub-zero surface air temperatures and wind chills can be dangerous. Frostbite can occur in 30 minutes or less.  Some school districts have closed in order to keep kids warm and safe from frostbite.  Check our Closings link below.

While the advisory is expected to expire after Wednesday morning, wind chill values will remain in the negative teens and single digits through the day. It is important to wear layers when going outside, cover as much exposed skin as possible, cover your nose/mouth to protect your lungs, wear wool and synthetic materials to keep the heat in your body, try to stay dry and out of the wind.

There will be a short ‘warm up’ on Thursday before another round of cooler air pushes back into southeast Wisconsin on Friday and Saturday. Wind chill temperatures will remain below zero during the rest of the week and into the weekend. Even though we do not have any additional advisories issued, it is very important to take proper precautions when going outside with these cold temps/wind chill values.

The main focus is when the warmer temperatures arrive. The long term outlook has above average temperatures back in Wisconsin by the end of January. Our average high is closer to 30°F, but we could see the mid to upper 30s around.
