Sheriff's officials: Man found homemade explosive on road, retrieved it, drove it to his workplace

WASHINGTON COUNTY -- The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office's bomb disposal unit on Thursday, July 21st was called out to a home in the Town of Addison in Washington County for a suspicious and possibly explosive device found on a rural road.Upon deputies’ arrival, they found that an Addison resident had found a homemade explosive on a nearby road.The man retrieved the object and drove it to his workplace -- where authorities responded and examined the device.As is standard in these cases, the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office was contacted and members of their bomb disposal unit responded to the call.After deputies examined the object, they made the object safe, moving and dismantling it in a safe area.The makeup and content of approximately one quarter pound of explosive material was deemed to be extremely dangerous to not only the builder(s) of the device, but anyone within proximity of the device upon detonation, with the potential of death or substantial injury to anyone in the area.Officials ask that people stay away from and avoid any handling of or the transportation of any type of suspicious package or potential explosive material they may encounter or observe and immediately call 911.Sheriff’s officials are seeking any information on those that may be involved in this case or anyone involved in manufacturing home-made explosives.This case remains under investigation.

1 killed, 1 badly hurt in head-on crash involving 4 vehicles in Jackson

JACKSON -- Officials with the Washington County Sheriff's Office say a 60-year-old Hartford woman was killed in a head-on crash involving four vehicles that happened Tuesday afternoon, July 19th on State Highway 60.It happened around 2:30 p.m. -- one-tenth of a mile east of County Highway M.Sheriff's officials say passing motorists advised that one operator was trapped in a vehicle, and another was ejected.Two people were noted to be seriously hurt upon the arrival of first responders.The trapped operator was taken to the hospital by Flight for Life after she was extricated.

31-year-old Menomonee Falls man pleads guilty after fatal hit-and-run crash in Germantown

WASHINGTON COUNTY -- A 31-year-old Menomonee Falls man has pleaded guilty in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed 50-year-old Keith Habenicht of Germantown.On August 23rd, 2015, 50-year-old Keith Habenicht of Germantown was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle southbound on Appleton Avenue north of Mequon Road.He was struck from behind and killed.On August 24th, Adam Neuhaus' attorney contacted Germantown police to make arrangements to turn over Neuhaus' vehicle, believed to be the striking vehicle in this hit-and-run.Police say Neuhaus was arrested on August 24th but he refused to make a statement and was unwilling to cooperate with the investigation.Neuhaus on Wednesday, July 20th pleaded guilty to two felony charges: Homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle and hit-and-run involving injury.Neuhaus will be sentenced on September 19th.

RICHFIELD -- The Washington County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to an address in the Village of Richfield on Monday evening, July 18th -- to investigate a report of a woman walking around her yard without clothing.When a deputy arrived on the scene, he approached a 30-year-old woman.

Driver of vehicle stolen from fitness center in Appleton arrested in Slinger after pursuit, crash

SLINGER -- A vehicle stolen from a fitness center in Appleton crashed into a utility pole in Slinger on Wednesday, July 13th.Officials with the Washington County Sheriff's Office say this all began around 11:30 a.m., when they were notified of a vehicle driving recklessly -- headed southbound on I-41 from Washington County.Less than 10 minutes later, the suspect vehicle was observed on I-41, just south of County Highway K in the Town of Polk, and a traffic stop was initiated.Officials say the female driver failed to yield and exited I-41 at State Highway 144 at a high rate of speed --  heading into Slinger.Slinger police then assisted with this pursuit.The pursuit was terminated when the vehicle was spotted being operated in a reckless manner in Slinger around 11:40 a.m.Deputies learned the vehicle had been stolen from a fitness center in Appleton earlier Wednesday.The suspect vehicle was spotted in several other locations south of State Highway 60 in the Town of Polk after the pursuit was terminated.Deputies observed the vehicle being operated in a reckless manner and did not re-initiate the pursuit.Just before noon, a deputy came upon crash involving a single vehicle at State Highway 60 and Slinger Road in Slinger.The vehicle had crashed into a We Energies utility pole in the intersection -- and the female driver was attempting to flee the scene on foot.The driver was taken into custody without incident.Officials say she refused to identify herself to deputies.

Germantown fire officials called out to West Rock building for fire in "baler unit;" some evacuated

GERMANTOWN -- Germantown police and fire officials on Friday evening, July 8th were called out to the scene of a fire at the West Rock building on River Lane in Germantown.Crews were called out to the scene around 7:00 p.m.The fire was reported in a "Baler Room," where scrap cardboard is sent via a ductwork system throughout the facility.Upon arrival, crews found the building had been evacuated, and all employees were accounted for.Smoke was showing from the rear loading dock door.A supervisor told officials they attempted to extinguish the fire -- but it was still burning.The fire was extinguished by firefighters.The ductwork was then inspected with thermal imaging cameras to ensure no fire was remaining.One employee had to be taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.The cause of the fire has been listed as accidental.

"There has to be consequences:" Five teens, four with criminal histories in custody after carjacking, pursuit

WASHINGTON COUNTY -- Five teenagers were taken into custody early Thursday morning, June 2nd after leading police on a pursuit into Washington County in a stolen vehicle -- leading to a call for consequences from Milwaukee's police chief and mayor.This incident began when the Washington County Sheriff’s Office was notified by the Milwaukee Police Department shortly after 12:30 a.m. of a high speed pursuit entering Washington County.The vehicle that was being pursued by Milwaukee Police Department was reported as stolen in a carjacking during the afternoon of June 1st.

Bomb threats called into three schools in the Milwaukee area: "It's frustrating"

GERMANTOWN -- A wave of bomb threats forced evacuations at schools across the state of Wisconsin and the country this week, and on Wednesday, May 25th, this happened at at least three schools in the Milwaukee area.Students were evacuated from Franklin High School in Franklin,County Line Elementary School in Germantown and Bradford High School in Kenosha after threats were phoned into those schools.

Investigation into suspicious incident at Ackerman's Park in West Bend reveals no threat to the public

WEST BEND -- Officials with the Washington County Sheriff's Office say an investigation into a suspicious person at Ackerman's Park has revealed there is no threat to any members of the public.Sheriff's officials on Monday, May 23rd were notified of a suspicious situation that occurred at Ackerman's Park on County Highway Z in West Bend around 6:30 p.m. on Monday.Two young girls, ages nine and 11, reported that a red or maroon older model minivan driven by a man in his 60s or 70s had stopped, and the man held out candy, asking whether the girls wanted any.The girls refused, and quickly left the area.The vehicle was then seen leaving the park.Sheriff's officials provided a description of the man, and on Tuesday, May 24th, Sheriff's officials said that person has been identified.A detective made contact with an 86-year-old West Bend man, acting on a tip from a citizen familiar with this person.

Alcohol believed to be a factor in single-vehicle rollover crash on Highway 41 in Washington Co.

WASHINGTON COUNTY -- Officials with the Washington County Sheriff's Office say alcohol is believed to be a factor in a rollover crash that happened on Highway 41 on Sunday, May 22nd.It happened just after 2:30 a.m. on Highway 41 southbound, approximately a half-mile north of County Highway K in the Town of Addison.Upon the arrival of first responders, a 23-year-old Allenton man was found lying in the southbound lanes of traffic.

"Hot kettle machine" for hot tar to blame for fire in garage at NR Asphalt & Pavement Maintenance

WEST BEND -- Officials with the Washington County Sheriff's Office say a hot kettle machine is to blame for a garage fire that happened in West Bend early on Thursday morning, May 19th.It happened shortly after 5:30 a.m. at "NR Asphalt & Pavement Maintenance" on Highway 144 near Pleasant Drive.A caller reported black smoke coming from the garage.A second caller reported a hot kettle machine for hot tar was inside the garage.Deputies arriving at the scene around 5:45 a.m. observed black smoke coming out of all sides of the garage, but no flames were observed.
