Delta reigns supreme at Mitchell Airport when it comes to on-time performance

MILWAUKEE -- Southwest Airlines might be the dominant carrier at General Mitchell International Airport, but it ranked second in September for on-time performance.Delta Airlines came in first -- finishing the month with 88 percent of its flights arriving on time.That's according to airline and airport data provider OAG.The federal DOT considers a flight to have arrived on time if the plane reaches the gate within 14 minutes of its scheduled arrival time.CLICK HERE for more on this story via the Milwaukee Business Journal.

Delta flight en route to Chicago lands in Milwaukee due to possible mechanical problem, weather

MILWAUKEE -- A Delta Airlines flight en route to Chicago landed in Milwaukee -- at General Mitchell International Airport Monday, August 29th due to a possible mechanical problem, and weather conditions in Chicago.According to a Delta spokeswoman, while heading to Chicago, the pilots received notification of a possible engine problem in the cockpit.Due to a combination of the possible engine problem and the weather in Chicago, the decision was made to land in Milwaukee.The flight landed safely, and passengers were then being bused to Chicago.No one was hurt.Technicians were checking the plane after it landed.Monitor FOX6 News and FOX6Now.com for updates on this developing story.

Mitchell Intl. Airport gets perfect score on annual FAA inspection for 9th consecutive year

MILWAUKEE -- The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has presented Milwaukee County’s General Mitchell International Airport (MKE) with a perfect score on its annual certification inspection.It is the ninth consecutive year MKE has received an inspection with zero discrepancies noted by inspectors.The FAA inspection, which is required annually by Part 139 of the Federal Aviation Regulations, includes a close look at pavement, marking, lighting and safety areas along all runways and taxiways.

Passenger traffic is on the rise at Mitchell International Airport

MILWAUKEE -- Passenger traffic rose more than three percent at General Mitchell International Airport in June, according to a news release issued by Mitchell International Airport on Friday, August 26th.June passengers totaled 611,001, an increase of 3.4% from the 591,145 total that was recorded in June of 2015.Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele issued the following statement regarding this development:

MILWAUKEE -- Frontier Airlines will launch new seasonal non-stop service from Milwaukee County’s General Mitchell International Airport to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport beginning December 7, 2016.“Frontier’s new service to Phoenix gives travelers from Wisconsin and northern Illinois another option for their leisure and business travel needs to Arizona,” County Executive Chris Abele said.  “Frontier’s growing network from MKE is welcome news, and we encourage our travelers to take advantage of the great low fares and non-stop service Frontier provides.”According to a press release, introductory sale fares on the route start at $69, and are only available online at www.flyfrontier.com.

Mitchell Airport now has indoor "Service Animal Relief Area" with synthetic grass

MILWAUKEE -- General Mitchell International Airport now has an indoor "Service Animal Relief Area," Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele announced Monday, August 8th.According to a statement from airport officials, the "Service Animal Relief Area" is located in a separate area adjacent to the Family Restroom in the Concession Mall, and it contains "K9Grass." The soft green synthetic grass -- designed specifically for dogs -- sits atop an under-grass flushing system that moves water and cleaning solution across a sloped floor.“Mitchell Airport is constantly innovating, and we’re pleased to offer this new area to make the Airport even more accessible to those with service animals,” County Executive Chris Abele said in the statement.  “This new area provides a cleaner, safer, better environment for service animals and their owners.”Mitchell Airport partnered with "Leader Dogs for the Blind" to ensure that the new area meets modern animal relief facility standards.The new area, which was formerly used as a restroom, was required by the U.S. Department of Transportation.Outdoor designated Pet Relief Areas are located at the exits from both ends of Ticketing and Baggage Claim.

Milwaukee Business Journal: New international terminal at Mitchell could cost up to $122M

MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee Business Journal reports on Wednesday, July 27th that Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele’s plans to reshape Mitchell International Airport’s terminal could cost airport users up to $122 million.Converting the space now used by Concourse E into a new international terminal could cost $22.6 million to $69.3 million, while consolidating all of Mitchell’s security checkpoints into a single location could cost $41.7 million to $52.3 million, according to a pair of studies commissioned by airport officials and obtained by the Milwaukee Business Journal through an open records request.CLICK HERE to read much more on this story from the Milwaukee Business Journal.

Fire department training held at Mitchell International Airport Tuesday

MILWAUKEE -- If you noticed a black plume of smoke rising near Mitchell International Airport on Tuesday morning, July 26th -- it was just emergency crews in training.Around 9:30 a.m., the fire department at the airport began conducting training which included a simulated fire emergency.
