Police seeking assistance in locating dog that bit Sheboygan woman

SHEBOYGAN (WITI) -- The Sheboygan Police Department is seeking assistance in locating a dog that bit a Sheboygan woman.According to Sheboygan police, the woman stated that a brown "pit bull-type" dog wandered into her yard on Monday, August 18th around 2 p.m.According to the woman, the dog appeared friendly, so she began petting it.

Vehicle "report cards:" Young police "Explorers" teaming up with officers to prevent thefts from vehicles

SHEBOYGAN (WITI) – Sheboygan Police Explorers are launching a new program aimed at preventing thefts from vehicles.The “Vehicle Courtesy Check” program will team up youth law enforcement Explorers with the department’s neighborhood officers and Explorer advisors to inspect vehicles parked in public spaces.They will be looking for obvious risk factors of thefts such as unlocked doors, open windows, or valuable items like purses, GPS units, or cell phones left out in the open.“Thefts from vehicles are one of the most prevalent types of theft, and the vast majority of those thefts involve items left in plain view inside of unlocked vehicles,” said Sheboygan Police Sergeant Kurt Zempel. “Our hope is that through the vehicle courtesy check program, we can reach out to community members and prevent them from becoming victims of theft,” he said.Zempel said he sees the program as an opportunity to reinforce the crime prevention practices for those people who already are sure to secure their valuables and vehicles, as well as a way to discuss better prevention habits for owners of vehicles who fail the courtesy inspections.Explorers will leave a courtesy check card on all inspected vehicles, thanking the owners of passing vehicles for their help in preventing crime and reminding owners of failing vehicles that they can have an impact on their likelihood of victimization.

ARRESTED: Sheboygan police arrest driver involved in hit-and-run accident

SHEBOYGAN (WITI) -- Sheboygan police located and arrested the driver involved in a hit-and-run accident that occurred Saturday, July 12th..According to police, the suspect driver struck a pedestrian around 2:30 a.m. in the area of N. 7th Street and Huron.Officials say the suspect vehicle had been parked, then sped away, striking a pedestrian.The pedestrian did not sustain significant injuries.Authorities say a citizen tip was instrumental in locating and identifying the suspect and vehicle.

Suspended without pay: Two Sheboygan PD officers accused of OWI are disciplined

SHEBOYGAN (WITI) -- Two Sheboygan police officers have received unpaid suspensions after they were arrested back in December 2013 -- accused of OWI.On December 4th, 2013, two off-duty officers reported they were involved in an accident at the intersection of Superior Avenue and North Taylor Drive in the city of Sheboygan.On-duty officers responded, and began an investigation of the accident.Both off-duty officers were arrested for OWI and operating with a prohibited alcohol concentration.Sheboygan PD initiated an internal investigation immediately.On May 28th, both officers' civil cases were finalized in Sheboygan Municipal Court, and the internal investigation was subsequently completed.Both officers were found to have violated department rules.In imposing discipline, both the seriousness of the offense and the employees' work records were taken into consideration.Ryan Walloch received a 15-day unpaid suspension, and Stephen Schnabel received a 30-day unpaid suspension.Sheboygan PD says immediately following the incident and throughout the investigation, both officers acknowledged the seriousness of the offense, expressed remorse, and apologized for and took responsibility for their actions.In a statement, Sheboygan PD says: "The Sheboygan Police Department has reinforced with our employees the seriousness of operating while intoxicated, the negative impact it has on our community, our role in both mitigating its impact and changing the culture around alcohol abuse, as well as the potential negative consequences internally for engaging in this behavior.The Sheboygan Police Department understands the importance of earning and maintaining the public's trust.

Dogs bite woman, search is on for animals' owner

SHEBOYGAN (WITI) -- The Sheboygan Police Department is asking for the public's help in identifying the owner of two dogs, one of which was involved in a dog bite on Thursday, June 5th.The dogs are described as brown Boxer-type dogs that were being walked by an adult woman around 50 years old and a male juvenile approximately 15 years old.The incident occurred near N 22nd St and Superior Ave around 7:43 p.m. on Thursday.

Shots fired on basketball court at Sheboygan's Kiwanis Park

SHEBOYGAN (WITI) -- Shots were fired on a basketball court at Kiwanis Park in Sheboygan on Saturday evening, May 31st.The Sheboygan Police Department received multiple 911 calls around 9 p.m. Officers arrived within minutes and interviewed numerous witnesses.No one was injured during the incident and the suspects had fled the scene.Officials say the suspects involved appear to be familiar with each other.

Police: Sheboygan man hit two parked cars, a squad car and a chain-link fence!

SHEBOYGAN (WITI) -- Sheboygan police have arrested a 20-year-old man after they say he hit two parked cars, a squad car and a fence early Wednesday morning, May 14th.Police say around 3:30 a.m., they received a report of a hit-and-run collision involving two parked cars in the 1200 block of South 10th Street.Earlier, an officer had stopped the offending vehicle for a traffic violation.Police say officers began looking for this vehicle and driver -- and around 3:50 a.m., police received a report of a car stuck on the curb near South 10th Street and Mead Avenue.Police say the 20-year-old driver was the sole occupant of the car.Police say the driver backed into a marked police vehicle that had stopped behind him -- causing minor damage to the squad.The suspect then fled from the officers.Police pursued the driver -- but the pursuit was terminated a few minutes later.Officers eventually found the vehicle at Lakeshore and Washington Avenue.Police say the driver had crashed through a chain-link fence for a water treatment plant.The driver was arrested for a number of offenses -- including OWI, felony eluding, reckless driving and several counts of hit-and-run.The driver was not injured -- but he was taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation before he was taken to jail.Police say the driver was on probation at the time of Wednesday's incidents.No one was injured.

Body found in Lake Michigan believed to be man missing since December

SHEBOYGAN (WITI) -- Sheboygan police say a body found in Lake Michigan, near Ludington, Michigan on Tuesday, April 15th is believed to be that of Allen Townsend -- who has been missing since December of 2013.Police say the description of the body found matched closely to Townsend.

Woman shoved to the ground, has purse stolen at Walgreens

SHEBOYGAN (WITI) -- Sheboygan police are investigating an instance in which a woman was shoved to the ground and had her purse stolen outside a Walgreens store.It happened around 2 a.m. at the store located at 1029 N. 14th St.The 48-year-old victim says she saw the man standing by a Redbox DVD Rental machine when she arrived.
