Sikh Temple shooting anniversary brings remembrance, recognition

OAK CREEK (WITI) -- We're just a few days away from the anniversary of the mass shooting at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin.On August 5th, 2012, a gunman walked into the temple, killing six people and wounding three others.On Friday, August 1st, members of the community began four days of memorials for those killed in the shooting.

Teens promote peace saying, "We're not going to be helpless"

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Sikh Temple shooting sent shock waves across the community, that one man was driven by sheer hatred to kill 6 people he knew nothing about."We felt confused that day, we felt helpless," said Sikh Temple member Pardeep Kaleka.Kaleka vividly remembers that day, as he lost his father in the shooting.But he used that horrific experience as an awakening to make a difference by co-founding Serve 2 Unite."Serve 2 Unite was a way of us saying you know that we`re not going to be helpless, we`re not going to be victims anymore, we`re going to be proactive," said Kaleka.This organization brings students from different schools together to discuss a variety of issues impacting the community such as segregation, violence, poverty, and bullying.They are taught how to be peacemakers and how to use things like art as a positive outlet."There`s a lot of violence and things like that going on in our community so having the outlet for all the youth to get together and actually talk about things in the community that are going on is perfect," said high school senior Daleshontai Tate.Senior Asia Nash admits that she used to get into a lot of fights, but through Serve 2 Unite she has learned that violence is not the answer."Me, I don`t even fight anymore.

(WITI) -- A day after a local soccer coach is in court for allegedly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old, another teen comes forward with allegations against Matthew Barr.The teen says she was harassed for months by Barr, and at one point, he asked intimate questions about what she was wearing."He was asking me what kind of underwear I wore.

The Rock's CEO eyeing up Oak Creek as "Plan B" for baseball stadium

OAK CREEK (WITI) -- The Milwaukee Business Journal says The Rock's CEO could be eyeing up a site in Oak Creek for a potential Frontier League baseball stadium as a "Plan B."The Business Journal says Mike Zimmerman says his top alternate location is the U.S. Postal Service site in Oak Creek.Zimmerman says discussions with Franklin are ongoing.Zimmerman was hoping to build the stadium in Franklin -- saying the stadium is a catalyst for a $40 million multi-use facility that would be built after the stadium goes in.Zimmerman asked Franklin to borrow $10.5 million for the stadium -- which he said he would repay through a lease agreement that would generate enough money annually to pay off the debt.Franklin officials have rejected that plan.

Authorities detonate grenades found in Oak Creek home

OAK CREEK (WITI) -- Officials detonated live hand grenades in a remote area in Oak Creek Tuesday night, March 18th after they were located in the attic of a home.According to officials, an Oak Creek resident called police after they found what they believed were hand grenades inside their attic.

Meijer looking to open a store inside Drexel Town Square in Oak Creek

OAK CREEK (WITI) -- The Milwaukee Business Journal is reporting a Meijer store is closer to becoming a reality in Oak Creek.According to state records, Meijer has paid $7 million for 17.5 acres of the Drexel Town Square property in Oak Creek -- the redevelopment plan for the former Delphi manufacturing plant.It will include retail, apartments, a hotel and a new city hall and library.There is no word on when crews will break ground on the Meijer store.
