MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- There are more than 500 deaths on Wisconsin roads every year, and deputies plan to be out in full force this Memorial Day weekend in an effort to keep those on the road safe.According to a recent survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, texting behind the wheel is the leading cause of teenage fatalities -- a statistic Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke wants to reduce in Wisconsin."The study indicated that texting while driving is becoming epidemic and it's a higher cause of death than even drinking while driving," Sheriff Clarke said.Texting and driving is just one of the things 115 deputies will be looking for this Memorial Day Weekend."I can tell you as sure as I'm standing here, the first thing that everybody does when they see the red and blue lights on the freeway system - they look down at their speed.

Waukesha man unknowingly purchases grenade

WAUKESHA (WITI) -- The Waukesha Police Department evacuated the neighborhood near Wilson and Grand Avenues after a grenade was found inside a home."I opened it up and oh my god!" said Shane Dietrich.Dietrich and a friend planned to make some extra cash by purchasing the contents of a public storage unit on Layton and Highway 100 in Greenfield.When Dietrich got home, he began searching through his treasure trove."There's a grenade with a pin still in the handle," said Dietrich. Driver arrested for OWI after car starts on fire on I-43

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee County Sheriff's officials responded to a car fire on I-43 at the Mineral Street off-ramp early Sunday morning, May 5th.Officials say a driver drove through a construction zone and into a two foot deep drop in the pavement, which caused the car to start on fire.The driver was able to escape, and was taken to the hospital -- and is expected to survive.That driver was also arrested for OWI (first offense).

Man arrested for bomb threat at Behavioral Health Division

Sheriff's officials: 22 weekend drunken driver arrests

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- At the start of this year, Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke ordered an aggressive weekend Driving Under the Influence (DUI) initiative to rid the Milwaukee County freeway system of drunken drivers.This weekend’s initiative from Friday, March 29th at 6:00 p.m. through Sunday, March 31st at 6:00 a.m. resulted in the arrest of 22 drunken drivers.Seven of these were repeat offenders, and one of the DUI-1st offenders is a correctional officer with the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office.A deputy initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle at 1:30 a.m. on Saturday for making an improper left turn on N. 4th Street at McKinley Avenue.

Sheriff's Office releases video of weekend OWI chase, arrest

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office has released video of a weekend OWI arrest involving a 19-year-old West Allis woman.Sheriff's officials say deputies were trying to pull Kirsten Reichard over early Saturday morning, March 23rd after they say she hit the median wall on three occasions.After a four-mile pursuit, Reichard finally pulled over in a construction zone near Chase Avenue.Officials say Reichard would not exit the vehicle, so deputies removed and handcuffed her.Reichard faces several charges, including OWI, recklessly endangering safety and possession of marijuana.
